Bhavna Kakar
Founder-Director + Editor-Publisher • Latitude 28 Gallery + TAKE on Art magazine • female
Bhavna Kakar is the founder, editor and publisher of TAKE on art, the leading journal on arts from the region, published from New Delhi since 2009. Her defining vision has placed the magazine on a global platform, through curated issues, and extensive travel to prominent art fairs and biennales around the world such as Art Basel, Art Basel Miami, Art Basel HK, Art Dubai, Asia Triennale Manchester, Videobrasil and Art Istanbul. Under her editorship TAKE has contributed significantly to art history in India by researching and commissioning essays on contemporary and modern archives that had not received serious scholarship until then — such as the history of the gallery system in India through TAKE Gallery and a comprehensive study on various strands of art writing in India through TAKE Critic. She is also the Founder-Director of the leading contemporary art gallery in New Delhi, Latitude 28, which has over the years supported experimental cutting edge practices from young and upcoming artists, showing them alongside leading artists of the time, breaking with periodization within curation. She has also curated several shows including ‘Cult of the Goddess: Past & Present in Indian Art’, National Museum Institute, New Delhi, 2005; ‘Joie de Vivre’, Rabindra Bhavan, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, 2005; ‘Re-Claim / Re-Cite / Re-Cycle’, Bose Pacia, Kolkata; Travancore Art Gallery, New Delhi, 2009; ‘Size Matters or Does It? I & II’, Latitude 28, New Delhi, 2010; and Diver|Cities: Asian Contemporary Art, The Arts House, Singapore, 2012. She has researched extensively on Pre-Modern Art, with a focus on Brahmanical Sculpture in the Vidarbha Region and Vakataka Sculptures. She is on the jury of several awards and residencies including the Raza Puraskar.
